State of the Ape began years ago with a client request to create a “zorilla”—a combination of a zebra and a gorilla. The project was eventually abandoned, but I liked the original striped gorilla enough to keep working with it.

Over time, I began adding random elements simply to see how weird I could make it—wings, a do-rag, a giant hand, to name a few. With every addition, I became less concerned with making sense and more interested in creating something strange, unexpected, and visually compelling.

The result became the accidental beginning of my WTF Series—artwork designed to make you stop, look closer, and ask, “What the fuck am I looking at?” There is no single meaning or correct interpretation. What you see—and what you believe it means—is entirely up to you. The meaning is whatever you give it.

That's the beauty of the WTF Series: sometimes the confusion is the point.
